The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
You must read this book. I adored it. 100%, not a thing I didn't like about it. It's written entirely in letter form, making it a quick read. It reminded me a bit (though not based on content, just characters alone) of the movie Cold Comfort Farm. The book is set in London and Guernsey, post WWII.
Juliet is a writer. Smart, funny and rife with a dry sense of humor. I loved her. Sidney is her best friend and editor (Sophie is Sidney's sister, and is also a BFF of Juliet). And then there are the residents of Guernsey...Isola, Dawset, Eben, Will, Kit, Amelia. One more interesting than the next. I loved them all. Kit's a little girl who's favorite game is "Dead Bride". Sweet and morbid all at once. I could just picture her wrapped up in lace jumping out of hampers.
This was one of those books that I simply did not want to end. And now I don't know what to do with myself tonight. I sort of don't want to read any of the 95 books by my bed because I'm afraid they won't be up to snuff.
Here are a few of my favorite lines from the book:
Letter from Isola to Juliet:
"I do not have a pleasing apperance. My nose is big and was broken when I fell off the hen-house roof. One eyeball skitters up to the top, adn my hair is wild and will not stay tamped down. I am tall and built of big bones.
Letter from Juliet to Sidney:
"My neighbor Evangeline Smythe is going to have twins in June. She is none too happy about it, so I am going to ask her to give one of them to me."
Letter from Juliet to Sidney:
"What an inspired present you sent Kit - red satin tap shoes covered with sequins. Wherever did you find them? Where are mine?"
Truly - pick up a copy. It was marvelous!
Have a great week!! xoxo
